How to be sure you are saved

Enjoying Assurance of Salvation

1.0 How are you saved?

Many people have read in the Bible the need to be saved but wonder how they can know for sure when they are saved. Is it by baptism, by attending church, by good works or by some other basis?

"For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16).

The Bible says that unless a person is born again, they will not see or enter the Kingdom of Heaven (John 3:3). If you believe in your heart and confess with your mouth that Jesus is the Son of God. That he died for you and was raised from the dead, then you will be saved (Romans 10:9-10).

PRAY A PRAYER LIKE THIS ONE:

Dear God, I am a sinner and need forgiveness. I believe that Jesus Christ  shed his blood and died for my sin. I choose to turn from sin and follow  Jesus. I now   invite Christ into my heart and life as my personal Saviour, so I can follow Him and serve Him all the days of my life. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer.

“I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents” (Luke 15:10).

One should not be afraid of how they are going to live the Christian life. Philippians 1:6 reads, “being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it onto completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”  If you realize you have done something wrong you should immediately  confess it, turn away from it (repent) and carry on with  the new life (1 John 1:9. Romans 10:9-10).

2.0 How do you know you are saved?

 a)     The primary basis is because the scripture says so:- God does not lie (Numbers 23:19)

Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears my word and believes in him who sent me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life (John 5:24)
These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that you may know that you have eternal life (1 John 5:13)

 b)   Because we obey the Lord’s commands.

He  who  says,  “I know him,”  and  does  not keep his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps his word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in him (1 John 2:4-5).

 c)   Because we have the witness of the Holy Spirit.

The (Holy) Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God. (Romans 8:16). He that believes on the Son of God has the witness in himself;

3.0 How do you grow in Christ?

3.1 Fill yourself with God’s word (Read the Bible)

When Jesus raised a young girl from the dead He immediately ordered that they give her food. Luke 8:49-5. Jesus said in Mathew 4:4 “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that  proceeds from the mouth of God”.  God said to Joshua (Joshua 1:8) "This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night .... you will be prosperous and will have good success".  Obey the word. Also Jeremiah 15:16.  The Bible tells God’s character, will and over thirty thousand (30,000) promises. (2 Corinthians 1:20 and Jeremiah 1:12).

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be thoroughly furnished unto all good works (1 Timothy 3:16-17).

You can start by reading the life and teachings of Jesus Christ in the gospels.

3.2 Be Prayerful

Prayer is talking with God to bring him thanks, praise, love and also to make your needs  known and to seek guidance and direction. The daily humble dependence on God in prayer keeps you in a right relationship with Him.   Jesus is the greatest example (Mark 6:46, Luke 5:16 & 6:12). How often should you pray? Prayer is a continuous God depending attitude. But also have special times of focusing on prayer. Especially, begin the day with prayer and Bible reading.

Luke 18:1 Men ought always to pray, and not to faint.

Luke 11:1-13 When you pray, say, “Our Father....”

Matthew 7:7-11 Ask, and it shall be given you...

3.3 Grow in Fellowship

Be involved in the life and ministry of the church.  Being a church member and attending church services is very important (Acts 2:42).  Believers enjoy meeting for fellowship, studying the Bible, encouraging each other to become more like Christ and worshipping the Lord (Hebrew 10: 25; Psalms 68:6).  Besides sharing joys, it is vital in times of discouragement, defeat, heartache and problems, to have caring, praying believers with whom to share burdens.

3.4 Be a Witness

Tell what God has done for you. Speak out confidently, by your words and a new way of living, about your conversion and faith in Jesus Christ. When you are silent about your faith the devil will take advantage and you can not be strong.  Many will be won to faith in Christ when they hear and see your personal testimony and ministry. Don’t be ashamed (Romans 1:16; Luke 9:26). The first Christians “...went everywhere preaching the word” (Acts 8:4). Reaching others and helping them to grow in Christ is a vital way for you to grow in Christ. (Mathew 28: 18-20,  Mathew 4:19, Acts 1:8)
